Folding Treadmill - To Fold or not to fold that is the Question
When you decide it is time to go out shopping for a new treadmill running machine, you might be surprised at the number of
brands, models and choices you have. There are many different manufacturers of treadmills and each one of them has
their good points and their bad points. One of the biggest questions you are going to have to ask yourself is do
you want a folding treadmill or a non folding treadmill? Both of them have their good points and in the end it
really boils down to where you are going to put it and what you are planning to use your new treadmill for.
Folding Treadmill - Open up Your Healthy Horizons
For many of us the thought of having to get dressed go to a health club and workout several
times a week makes us choose not to bother getting any exercise at all. At the same time if you live in an urban
area there may not be much choice as the city streets are for the most part not a very safe place to walk let alone
try and do any kind of serious jogging. The only option that this leaves is to either forgo the whole idea of
exercise or to buy the equipment you need for use at home. If space is limited you can still get your exercise
using a folding treadmill.
Why You Need a Treadmill
If you are, like so many of us suffering with a weight problem a electric treadmill is one of the ideal types of low impact workout equipment on the
market. Not only can you get plenty of fat burning exercise while you walk and eventually jog, but this type of
workout when done properly has been labeled as one of the better forms of cardio exercise for your heart. While
going for a stroll outside in the fresh air may feel like a good exercise, you need to get your heart pumping and
make your muscles work hard to lose any significant weight.
In the warmer months you might be able to get outside and put in a good
strenuous walk or jog as long as it is not raining and you have somewhere safe to do so. The picture changes
in the wet or cold months, which is where most people fail to keep up with their exercise program. If you have
a folding treadmill in your house, you can lower the tread down any time that you want to and get your
exercise in.
Enjoying Your Daily Walk
One of the biggest concerns that many larger people have when they are considering buying a
folding treadmill is how much weight the treadmill can handle and how stable may or may not be. The modern
treadmill whether it is folding or not is very stable for most weights upwards of 300 lbs (136 kg) or more in fact
most of them are rated well in to the 400 lb (181 kg) range. However, when you are looking at the many different
models available, you should always check the maximum weight ratings to make sure it is safe for your weight.
Finding space for a treadmill in most people's houses has always been an issue, especially with
the older non-folding models. When you opt for a folding treadmill, you will find that space is really not an
issue, as the majority of them only occupy a space against the wall that is 24 inches (61 cm) deep by 30 inches (76
cm) wide or less depending on the model you buy. Some of the larger, models with built in stereos and those with
LCD televisions can be quite a bit bigger.
If you are serious about working on the extra weight that you have packed on or just want to
start feeling healthier a treadmill is the perfect place to start. When coupled with a healthy diet you may find
that not only will you lose the extra weight, but you will find that you feel much better and begin to look forward
to your daily walk or run.
The Pros
In the beginning treadmills were simple manual affairs more often than not used for
rehabilitation instead of fitness. Today the modern treadmill has evolved into a sophisticated piece of exercise
equipment loaded with electronics and capable of a myriad of exercise routines. In general the folding treadmill
comes in one of two styles, manual folding and power or assisted folding. The manual ones require that you
physically lift the running surface up, while the power version uses either a hydraulic lift similar to that on
hatchbacks and minivans or an electric motor to do the job.
With a fold up treadmill you are far less restricted on the space that you can store it in when
you are not using it. Typically the whole thing sticks out from the wall less than 46 cm (18 inches) which means
you can store it almost anywhere as long as you have enough room to drop it into place when you want to use it.
Being able to lift it up and out of the way also makes keeping the area around it clean much easier as you can lift
it up to vacuum the area or just leave it up until you want to use it. Since most folding
treadmills have wheels you can also roll them out of the way if the need arises.
The Cons
There really are not too many cons when it comes to buying a folding treadmill and they are
definitely the most popular choice among home users. Having said this, the one major concern that most people
express with the fold up treadmill is problems with stability. Many people seem to feel that this style of
treadmill is perfect for someone who wants to walk or even jog, but that they come up short when the person wants
to run. If you look at most health clubs you will find that they use the non-folding variety because they are more
stable.
There is some truth to this statement; however what you do need to do if you are looking at
folding treadmills is look at their stability rating. Most of the top brands list the stability rating of each
model that they sell. As long as you buy one that comes from a well known brand and has a high stability rating,
you should still be able to run as much as you like. Unless you plan to buy one with a motorized lift you may find
that the platform can be quite heavy, if you have any type of disability at all you may find this to be a
problem.
